Jonathon Gauthier: Four-year Varsity Athlete in Both Tennis and Roller Hockey

By: Jacqueline Peterson, SRHS student

Scripps Ranch High School’s Roller Hockey team has had a history of success, winning CIF championships in 2003, 2004, and 2005. This season, the Falcons started strong with a 12-7 win against Del Norte High School. The victory was a feat of teamwork, with all players playing their positions well. However, Jonathon Gauthier, a senior, has stood out to coaches Mark Lopez and Bob Gauthier as exceptional. “As not only one of his coaches, but his father as well, it was a difficult decision to spotlight him…I have always tried to avoid any perception of favoritism, in many cases being consciously harder on him than any other players on my teams,” explains Coach Gauthier, “In this case, I conferred with other coaches and they all agreed that Jonathon was the ‘right’ player to spotlight.”

“He is developing a leadership role with his team and is recognized as such by his teammates,” says Coach Gauthier. “Jonathon motivates our team to be better and perform to the best of our abilities,” Liam McMenamy, the team’s goalie, agrees. Gauthier plays offense, and enjoys scoring as well as setting up goals for his other teammates. He looks forward to some of the hardest games of the season, saying “we have healthy rivalries with those teams, and the games will help our team get better and prepare for the playoffs.” Gauthier has been playing roller hockey since middle school, having played with Marshall Middle School’s Mustangs. He has played during all four of his high school years, and has “developed game skills”, according to Coach Gauthier. “In a world of ice hockey players, Jonathon is truly a roller hockey player,” comments Manager David Peterson.

Apart from roller hockey, Jonathon plays on SRHS’s varsity tennis team. In addition to being a four-year varsity athlete in both tennis and roller hockey, Gauthier was recognized in the 2010-2011 school year as a “First Team All Academic” athlete by the San Diego Union-Tribune. With a 3.75 GPA, Gauthier is interested in various schools, including Lindenwood University, University of Arizona, University of Colorado Boulder, and California State Long Beach. His interests lie in either accounting or journalism. “I am interested in accounting because my cousin is currently working on his graduate degree in accounting, and he’s one of my inspirations…on the other hand, I would like to major in journalism, because I would like to be able to write about something I enjoy,” explains Gauthier, “I would like to be either an accountant, a sports commentator, or a sports writer.”

Gauthier is not only an all-academic, all-varsity athlete, but a well-liked teammate. “Jonathon is a nice kid, full of energy and fun to hang around,” says Brandon Lopez, a fellow senior. “Jonathon is a well-rounded kid who is a good friend and supports our team inside and outside of the rink by doing well in school and being a good friend,” adds McMenamy. Coach Gauthier is confidant that his son will succeed, adding, “I think as he continues to develop and enters his college years, he will have to continue to motivate himself and work hard to be successful—but I have no doubt that he is capable of doing that.”

Meet Multi-Sport Athlete Jayne Caputo

By: Jacqueline Peterson, SRHS student

Scripps Ranch High School field hockey has a record of success in CIF championships, having won in 1997, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, and 2010. While the team as a whole is impressive, Jayne Caputo stands out as extraordinary. The senior was chosen because of her consistently formidable skill. “She is an outstanding athlete and we can always rely on her giving 100%,” comments Coach Jane Morrill. In addition to being a skilled player, Caputo has supported her team by switching positions. “Jayne really stepped it up this year, switching from midfield to defense,” adds Coach Morrill. Caputo enjoys the switch to defense, saying “My favorite thing about defense is that you get to keep other teams from scoring and really make an impact on the game. The other team can’t win if they can’t score, and it’s a great feeling to be a big factor of winning a game.”

According to her fellow teammates, Caputo deserves this recognition for many reasons. “She takes it upon herself to represent her teammates, making sure everyone is happy and we function well as a team,” says Caroline Stuart, a fellow 12th grader on the field hockey team. “Her attitude during field hockey as well as in school is always positive. Not only is she a good athlete; she also balances sports with schoolwork,” explains Kiana Corpus, a forward on Caputo’s team.

The SRHS field hockey team has done well thus far, having won six of six games. Though the season is just beginning, Caputo has already stood out to Coach Morrill, as well as her teammates. “During the game against Serra on September 20, Jayne came out of nowhere to save a goal,” recalls Courtney Enge, a junior on Caputo’s team. “Jayne was named player of the game when we beat Torrey Pines 2-0,” comments Coach Morrill. “Jayne succeeds in every game, but the best was our home game against Serra. She controls center field and stays strong,” adds Corpus.

Though field hockey is one of Caputo’s priorities, she is also on the varsity track and field and soccer teams at SRHS. “Jayne is a three-sport varsity athlete. She’s a very gifted athlete and enjoys helping her teammates,” comments Stuart. In addition to high school sports, Caputo also plays club soccer. Though extraordinarily successful in sports, Caputo also has a GPA of 4.7. “I have a lot of colleges in mind, but my favorites are UCLA, Bentley University, Gonzaga, and Davis. I am interested in studying psychology, business, or pre law because I am passionate about those subjects,” comments Caputo. While holding up her 4.7 GPA and four sports teams, Caputo also works regularly at a restaurant in Scripps Ranch and volunteers by helping the underprivileged and coaching youth sports teams.
