El Camino High, home of the Wildcats, has a unique beginning. Before becoming a 9-12 school in 1975, we were Oceanside High East, with only the 11th and 12th grades of Oceanside High. With only upper grades, the school had a more challenging curriculum with higher expectations. That continued with the new El Camino High and formed its foundation.

We have great teachers. Among them, three are National Board Certified, five have doctorates and 26 have master’s degrees. We have numerous nominees for district teacher of the year and two winners. In our recent surveys, 98% of our staff enjoys working at El Camino and 91% of parents are proud that their child attends our school. Our school inspires loyalty. Our teachers bring their children from other districts to attend here and it is interesting that over 10% of our teachers are El Camino graduates.

Since our beginning, we have affirmed our commitment that all students can achieve a challenging curriculum. El Camino was lauded as one of four schools in the nation by the U.S. Dept. of Education for closing the achievement gap by creating a “success culture among kids” (“Closing the Achievement Gap, Lessons from Successful Schools”, U.S. Dept of Education, 2005.)

We provide our students with the support they need to succeed. We were one of the first  44 schools in the nation to offer Advancement Via Individual Determination or AVID. All departments provide tutoring. Our English Language Development program is successful in  improving results for English Learners.

On December 4, 2008, U. S. News and World Report recognized El Camino with silver medal status as one of America’s Best High Schools. Their criteria “is based on the key principles that a great high school must serve all its students well….” At El Camino we truly believe in our vision to serve all students, and we will continue to strive for this success.
