College Bound Letter of Intent Signing Party
SAN DIEGO (Nov. 9, 2011)—More than 250 students, parents and coaches attended the National Letter of Intent early signing party at the San Diego Hall of Champions with 75 area athletes penning their names to receive college scholarships.
Baseball, with 21, and softball, with 14, led the way, which is no surprise since the San Diego area has been considered a hot-bed for those sports all the way to Hoover’s Ted Williams . The number would have even been larger but two major baseball prospects, Troy Conyers and Chuck Moorman, were out of town with the Junior National team and sent their regrets.
The focus for the local media was on basketball where three highly-rated girls players decided to stay close to home.
San Diego High’s Tia Dixon, a flashy guard, made good on her commitment to San Diego State way back as a sophomore while the Hood sisters of La Jolla Country Day, Maya and Malina, were in the spotlight for the University of San Diego.
For the boys, All-CIF returnees Matt Shrigley of La Costa Canyon (San Diego State) and Torrey Pines’ Joe Rahon (Boston College) signed.
